Quality attractions are not hard to come by in the city of Bursa, and when it comes to museums, there's plenty to choose from. The Bursa Archaeology Museum (Arkeoloji Muzesi) is certainly amongst the most popular on offer and contains some interest items relating to the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires.

Founded in 1973, the Ataturk Museum is situated Bursa's the westerly suburb of Cekirge and within a grand 19th-century Turkish timber mansion. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (1881 to 1938), Turkey's official founder and first president, actually used this mansion as an official residence when he visited the city over the years and remembers his achievements.

One of the city's true cultural highlights, the Bursa Archaeology Museum is to be found in the Cekirge Park of Culture (Kultur Park) and comprises four large exhibition halls, along with a library. On exhibit are many ancient treasures, discovered in the ancient Mysia and Bithynia regions of Turkey. With highlights including coins, pottery, glass works, bronze pots and numerous monuments, the oldest exhibits are more than 2,000 years old.

Celebrates the life and works of Ataturk, the Ataturk Museum is also an excellent example of fine civil architecture, featuring very simple, yet beautiful architecture The surrounding landscaped garden adds a further element of interest, as do the enclosed balconies and many personal effects and photographs of Ataturk himself.

Bursa Museums and Art Galleries: Bursa Turk Islam Eserleri Muzesi (Turk Islamic Works Museum / Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art)

The Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art resides on the easterly side of the city centre and first opened its doors to members of the general public in the mid-1970s. A large selection of impressive works of art and artefacts are to be found here, dating from the Ottoman period, including paintings, statues, textiles, manuscripts, embroideries, ceramics, woodcarvings and even weaponry. There is also a traditional Turkish bath and coffee house.

Bursa Museums and Art Galleries: Mudanya Mutareke Muzesi (Mudanya Armistice Museum)

Located within the neighbouring seaside town of Mudanya, which is no more than 30 minutes away by road, the Mudanya Armistice Museum is actually sited in the very building where the famous Armistice of Mudanya was signed in October 1922. A large statue of a white dove stands outside the entrance, symbolizing peace and unity. The building itself is particularly attractive and features ornate Turkish-style windows and a bright white facade, where exhibits are displayed over three floors, including many of the original furnishings.

The Bursa City Museum celebrates the rich Turkish history of the Marmara area and its plentiful exhibits have a strong folklore theme. On display are the works created by the local craftsmen over the years, ranging from wood carvings and hand-woven Turkish rugs at their finest.

The Bursa Art Gallery stands on the centrally located Republic Square and within the Ahmed Vefik Pasha Theatre. Visitors to the gallery will find many paintings and sculptures created by artists from across Turkey, as well as ever-changing exhibitions and other art-related events.

Bursa Museums and Art Galleries: Osmanli Evi Muzesi (Ottoman House Museum)

Situated close to the Sultan II Murat Camii mosque and within the city's historical Muradiye, the Ottoman House Museum may operate fairly irregular opening hours, but is well worth visiting if it is open when you are passing. Next door, the 15th-century Muradiye Medresesi contains an interesting number of tombs.

Bursa Museums and Art Galleries: Osmanli Halk Kiyafetieri ve Takilari Muzesi (Ulumay Museum of Ottoman Folk Costumes and Jewellery)

The Ulumay Museum of Ottoman Folk Costumes and Jewellery is home to a much-prized collection, which is housed within the beautiful 15th-century Sair Ahmet Pasa building. Opened as recently as 2004, the main highlights have a strong Turkish folklore theme and are brought to life via an enjoyable guided tour.
